Packaging, sustainability, responsible entrepreneurship
For many generations, we have been involved in the design, development, production of cardboard packaging for all possible applications. The responsible use of the environment is part of the basic philosophy of the company. Global warming, climate change and recent reports about the disappearance of the permafrost are things on which we can do something about directly by developing more environmentally friendly production processes and recycling. For the same reason, there is also a lot of attention for energy saving.
To reinforce our values, Remmert Dekker Packaging is:
- FSC certified (sustainable cardboard)
- PEFC certified (sustainable forest management)
- ISO 14.001 certified (environmental management)
At Remmert Dekker there is no gas meter in the company building. In September 2001 we are almost entirely burnt down and then rebuilt energy-efficient. Heating and cooling are used geothermal energy in combination with heat pumps which mean 40% (!) less CO2 emission. In 2012 the system modernized with an additional 200,000 kilowatts of extra energy per year.
In the autumn of 2013, Remmert Dekker placed 100,000 kWh of solar panels on the factory premises, with which a large proportion of the energy used is supplied with green electricity
The lighting in the production and warehouse is equipped with high-frequency fluorescent tubes with a minimum lifespan of 40,000 burning hours which is long.
In recent years, Remmert Dekker has already replaced its commercial vehicles for electric cars. Cars are charged via charging stations at the company.
When purchasing cardboard, we try to take the environment into account as much as possible. The covenant packaging has contributed a lot to the increased use of recycled (gray) cardboard. From sustainability this is the best choice, however, in the case of foodstuffs, migration plays an important role and is therefore increasingly chosen virgin fiber (white) cardboard.
Remmert Dekker is FSC and PEFC certified. Both are schemes for responsible and sustainable forest management. FSC is better known, but PEFC, however, has a twice larger share of certified forest and in order to establish this standard, PEFC is "bottom-up" from a forum of various stakeholders. Two big plus points for us.
With offset printing, not only ink is used, but also water. For technical reasons, often there is one percent of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) added. However, IPA is a very volatile, toxic substance and is harmful to people and the environment. For us, this was reason enough in the year 1992 to completely switch to alcohol-free printing.
Many stories are circulating about vegetable inks. Ink can be made on the basis of mineral oils and/ or on basis of vegetable oils. We only speak of vegetable inks if they are 100% free of mineral oils.
Remmert Dekker uses mineral oil free migration-poor printing inks and varnishes also free of bisphenol ASH.
With modern fast printing presses (purchase 2012, 2015) the best usable technology is applied. The washing program is adjusted in such a way that a minimal use of washing products yields a maximum result. There we work with an aromatic-free 'class 3' detergent product. Much environment and people friendlier than the fleeting and fast cleaning detergents.
With the help of a Colormatic ink station, smaller ink quantities can be mixed to 100 grams.
Previously this was up to a kilo which saves 33,500 kg of ink per year.
In the warehouse use is made of mobile racks, something normally only in the deep-freeze industry is used. The available space of the warehouse is now optimally used with 150%
Investments were also made in a logistics system for printing and punching machines. Pallets of cardboard are used for use first turned and placed on plastic pallets. With St v/d Brink we have a transport partner who is at the forefront of sustainability. Reducing fuel use and CO2 emissions are to their maximum attention.
All waste packaging is sorted separately and collected for processing or recycling.

The rinsing water for the water-borne dispersion paints in the printing plant is not discharged into the sewer, but through a waste processor filtered.
In addition, investments were made in a separate installation for the waste cardboard. The machine feeder in the die-cutting can with a choice of switch, separate the waste cardboard in production. This separation plant is extended with an air return pipe to bring the filtered air back into the company so that none heat and humidity from the production is lost.
